Frequently Asked Questions
Scoring, modes, the AI Planner, DD night, and your data - the short answers before you tee off.
How does scoring work?
Every bar is a hole. Every sip is a stroke. Each bar has a par - roughly how many sips that stop should take. Score under par for bragging rights, over par for penalty rounds. Lowest total at the end of the night wins. The host can edit any score from the scorecard tab, and mulligans (1-3 per round, host-set) wipe a hole entirely.
What game modes are there?
Classic crawls run 9 or 18 holes from the Crawl Library, a template, or your own route. The 9x9 Challenge is a nine-hole sprint with its own food and baseball variants. Tournaments bracket up to 16 crews into single elimination until one crew takes the night. Spectators can watch any crawl free from the Course Marshal view.
Do I need the app to play?
Not if a friend shared a code - tap Join Crawl and play right in your browser, no download needed. The full iPhone app adds native haptics, on-device reminders, the AI Planner, and the ability to build and share your own crawls.
How many people can play?
A single crawl runs solo up to about 12 players - the host shares a 6-character code and friends join from any phone, with spectators watching free. Want a bigger night? Tournaments bracket up to 16 separate crews into a single-elim showdown and crown one champion.
How does the AI Planner build a route?
Type a city, pick a vibe - dive, craft, brewery, classy night - and the planner builds a real walkable route from live map data in seconds, laid out stop to stop on a live map. Pick a 9- or 18-hole round and edit any hole before you tee off.
What is Designated Driver mode?
Any player can flag themselves as the DD for the night. Their score locks to zero and stays out of the standings, with a painted DD halo and chip on their avatar, and the round-end Get-A-Ride button puts a ride one tap away. The DD achievement is celebrated in the Hall of Fame as the hero stat of the night.
Can I plan a crawl for a future night?
Yes. Pick a date and time when you build the crawl and it is saved as upcoming, ready to share. On the iPhone app you can opt in to a morning 'crawl today' heads-up and a 'tee time soon' nudge about 30 minutes before it kicks off, so the crew shows up on time.
Will I get notifications?
Only ones you switch on. On the iPhone app you can opt in to gentle on-device reminders - a rate-your-round nudge after the night winds down, a 'your crew is here' ping when friends join your lobby, and tournament bracket alerts. They are off by default, you can mute any category, and they never fire while you are already in the app.
What data do you collect?
The minimum to run the game: your display name, avatar, scores, and the 6-character game code. No account, no real name, no email, no precise GPS, no ad tracking. Read the full policy on the Privacy page.
Is it safe and responsible?
Bar Crawl Golf is a tracker, not an encourager - the lowest score wins, so the math rewards restraint. Hard 21+ age gate at first launch, per-hole caps enforced, hydration reminders mid-round, and a Get-A-Ride button at round-end. Drink water. Know your limit. Get a ride home.
